Zombie Dogs!

from Evan's blog ...

Boffins create zombie dogs | The Other Side | Breaking News 24/7 - NEWS.com.au (27-06-2005) concerns the suspended animation of dogs via cryotherapy and salt solutions. They claim 3 hours of clinical death followed by revival and tests showing no brain damage. They hope to test on humans within a year.

The essential hope is to be able to suspend seriously hurt people until they can be appropriately treated, as opposed to cryonically suspending people for decades until their terminal chronic condition can be cured. Still, it’s very interesting.

Politics and podcasting

Yes, Mike, I'm here. Just nutty busy.

I've been continuing my struggles to identify some productive steps I can take to combat the ugliness that's taking place in our nation's capital. I'm not completely satisfied with my MoveOn.org experience and am still wondering if there's a way to assemble a network of like-minded people that in some way can contribute to change. The MoveOn model puts together neighborhood teams. We've got wonderful neighbors but in many ways, I'd be more inspired to work toward something if I were working with my friends. The real question I pose to all of you is, "Is grassroots activity only productive if it remains physically localized?" In other words, can a grassroots political activity be successful if those involved are spread out over the Internet?

Speaking of Internet, iTunes 4.9 is out and it integrates podcasting (both client features and submission for publication). I've already pinged Steve, my studio partner, about the idea of starting up a semi regular podcast. Knowing us, it would probably be some combo of our own music, local/unsigned music, politics, life experiences, goofy skits, etc. I'm also wondering whether we set it up so that we accept content submissions from others so that we can assemble a more diverse program. Clearly, anyone can podcast on their own but what I'm thinking is that we might provide people with a way to generate a single short audio clip and submit it to us. They wouldn't have to deal with the overhead of setting up their own ongoing podcast. I'm curious about all of your thoughts on this...

Pictures from the Ghost Town

I just finished a preliminary edit of some pictures I took at Bodie State Park in the Eastern Sierra. Don't think I'm going to touch these much any time soon. Very tired of photo editing. Sorry about the crude web page. It was the simplest I could come up with on the fly. May take a while to load on a slow connection (80-90 pictures to load). Look here.

Hello?

Is anyone there?

Awfully quiet here ... on this blog.

No matter.  Chris and Nancy got some great photos of the ghost town at Bodie State Park.  You can see a few of Chris' on his blog and there are some of Nancy's posted on Shutterfly.  Most of them are quite good, I think.

$29.95 Video Camera Launched

My new company has just launched its latest product.  There are a few articles of note: $29.95 one-time-use video cameras ready ( USA Today ) and Testing the New Disposable Camera ( The Wall Street Journal )

I used one of the cameras last weekend.  It's a pretty cool experience.  The camera is small and light and easily fits in a jacket pocket.  The video is pretty good.  After processing ( $12.95 at a CVS store ) you have a DVD that can be played back on a standard DVD player or on a PC ( the Mac OS support sucks ).

It's very cool that PureDigital ( a tiny company of 40 employees ) was able to get such great media coverage. Walt Mossberg doesn't review every new device to be sold in a drug store. ( wink )

Make magazine & blog

Make magazine is a Popular Mechanics for the computer age. It's really great, if rather expensive. They have a very cool blog that has fascinating stuff in it.

As long as I'm at it, Kevin Kelley's Cool Tools is also a lot of fun.

Safari RSS makes all these things much easier to follow!
